How to take a Photograph

In 1974 Paul Strand was asked how he chose the things he photographed:

‘I don’t,’ he replied. ‘They choose me’

Cartier-Bresson said much the same thing:

‘It is the photo that takes you; one must not take photos’

and so did Diane Arbus:

‘I don’t press the shutter. The image does.’

So, perhaps it’s time to go and be chosen.
