In 1974 Paul Strand was asked how he chose the things he photographed:
‘I don’t,’ he replied. ‘They choose me’
Cartier-Bresson said much the same thing:
‘It is the photo that takes you; one must not take photos’
and so did Diane Arbus:
‘I don’t press the shutter. The image does.’
So, perhaps it’s time to go and be chosen.
